Looking For Love from Fallout to Dream Daddy | Queer Tropes in Video Games

In this installment, we examine the complex history of gay relationships in games, from Fallout 2 in 1998 to much more recent games like Dream Daddy and The Last of Us: Left Behind. For a long time, even those rare games that included any opportunities at all for players to pursue queer romance or sex options often cordoned off that content like something that needed to be carefully quarantined, requiring players to make a series of specific choices in order to access it, even as those same games frequently put heterosexual content front and center. Narrative and gameplay mechanics have regularly been used as tools to normalize straight relationships while othering or demonizing queer ones, but a relatively recent wave of games that center gay relationships demonstrates how games can serve to normalize and celebrate queer love as well.

There is Choices Stories You Play Hack and choices stories you play tv tropes.

It’s insidious! It’s omnipresent! It’s the number one way to justify two of your heroes kicking the crap out of each other! It’s… apparently mostly a thing in superhero media, judging by the examples in this video. Either that or I just watch too much superhero stuff.

Got a favorite mind-control plotline? Drop in the comments! Debate their validity! Fight fight fight!

Thanks to patron Devin Hoffarth for requesting this topic!

Throughout much of game history, from early Leisure Suit Larry adventures to the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto, gay and trans characters were rarely depicted at all except to serve as cheap punchlines, perpetuating harmful stereotypes in the process. Sadly, it’s still not unheard of for queer characters to be nothing but objects of ridicule. In this episode, we explore the homophobia and transphobia that has dominated games from the text adventures of the early 1980s to some of the biggest blockbusters of recent years. We also address why “If you don’t like it, don’t play it” is not a reasonable response to these issues, and we look at some games that represent queer characters in more positive ways.

Well! After that trope talk on redeemed villains went up, I got bombarded with requests to do this little number next, so here we are!

Despite being something of a dark reflection of the redeemed villains trope, the fallen hero is significantly simpler and less varied than its counterpart. But despite its simplicity, there’s a lot of interesting effects it can have on a story! Mostly, it subverts the notions of unassailable heroism and forces your audience to confront a more realistic framework of morality than a simple black-and-white good-people-bad-people dichotomy. Heroes aren’t supposed to be able to fall, so what do we do when one DOES?

Contains late-arrival spoilers for Berserk, Avatar and Avatar: Legend of Korra, and technically also Death Note, The Dark Knight, and the Bible.

Do we like this trope? Hate it? …Can we really pin it down at all? For such a well-known literary device, it really doesn’t seem to MEAN much most of the time. But sometimes, “chosen one” is more than just “designated hero” and actually opens the story up for some interesting plotlines! So to celebrate this happy new year, let’s all talk about what it means to be a Chosen One!

Yeah I know that one Lord of the Rings clip widescreened itself off the projector. My bad~

Got a favorite chosen one/chosen one type? Drop a comment!

EXAMPLES USED (ROUGHLY IN ORDER OF FIRST APPEARANCE): Vision of Escaflowne, Inuyasha, Harry Potter, Star Wars Ep. 1, Kung Fu Panda, My Hero Academia, Shazam/Captain Marvel, Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Green Lantern: First Flight, Trollhunters, Merlin, Ultimate Spider-Man, Thundercats (2011), Voltron: Legendary Defenders, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Zelda franchise, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, W.I.T.C.H., Exalted, Lord of the Rings, The Lion King, Berserk, Moana

Time travel! A concept as old as insert obvious joke here! Today let’s talk about how time travel works (or doesn’t) and why its stories can be a little… weird sometimes.

What’s your favorite time plot? Also, which doctor/companion is your fave? (Mine’s 10 and Martha deserved better)

EXAMPLES USED: Doctor Who (s1e1, An Unearthly Child), Doctor Who (s1e2, The Daleks), Doctor Who (s29e7, 42), The Terminator, Back to the Future, Gravity Falls (s1e9, The Time Traveler’s Pig), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (s1e1, Pilot), Justice League (s1e24-26, The Savage Time), Samurai Jack (s1e1, I), Samurai Jack (s5e7, XCVIII), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Doctor Who (s28e9, Rise of the Cybermen), Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Doctor Who (s31e12, The Pandorica Opens), Assassin’s Creed, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Thundercats 2011 (s1e7, Legacy), The Flash (s4e23, We Are The Flash), Justice League (s3e12-13, The Once and Future Thing), Kim Possible: A Sitch In Time, Doctor Who (s30e11, Turn Left), Terminator: Genisys, Doctor Who (s27e8, Father’s Day), Doctor Who (s30e2, The Fires of Pompeii), Doctor Who (s29e11-13, Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords), Doctor Who (s27e12-13, Bad Wolf/The Parting Of The Ways), The Flash (s1e23, Fast Enough)

Do you know how many of these examples had Will Friedle in a starring role? MORE THAN I EXPECTED. Dude is prolific. Did you know he played Ron Stoppable AND ALSO BATMAN?

Adaptational Attractiveness is a trope in film and television. This is when a character that is originally written in a novel as being non-attractive is adapted onto screen by a conventionally attractive actor. In this video I focus mainly on Art3mis from Ready Player One, Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise and Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones.

If you want to read more about the trope visit the TVtropes page here: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AdaptationalAttractiveness That’s where I got the name for the trope and some of the examples used.

This game deals with mature themes. It shows scenes that some may find disturbing, unethical and triggering. It also contains offensive language, racial slurs, sexual themes, gore and violence. Player discretion is advised.

The Letter is an interactive, horror/drama visual novel inspired by classic Asian horror films, Ju-ON: The Grudge and The Ring. Told through an immersive branching narrative, the game puts the players into the shoes of seven characters as they find themselves falling prey to a vicious curse plaguing the Ermengarde Mansion for centuries.

In this game, your choices will shape and drive the story forward: will you mend a relationship on the verge of collapse, or will you let it fall apart? Will you risk saving them, despite the consequences, or leave them to die a gruesome death? The fate of all the characters is in your hands.

Non-chronological storytelling with seven chapters, spanning over 700,000 words across all routes. Expect a lot of reading!

Romance, friendship and drama; apart from horror, the game puts heavy emphasis on relationships and character development.

Seven playable characters with varying personality and approach to difficult situations.

Countless butterfly effects; your choices heavily affect the story.
Full English Voice Acting (optional).

Beautifully painted art style, with over 80 backgrounds, 100 CGs and 50 Epilogue CGs (variations included).

Quick-Time Events (optional).

A branching tree that keeps track of your progress/route.

A journal that narrates the events in chronological order, and jots down the clues found about the Ermengarde Mansion.

Over 170 achievements.
